On January 28, 1988, Towson Alumni and Major League Baseball player Al Rubeling passed away at age 74. Rubeling was the first Towson student to make it into the Major Leagues; he played for teams like The Pittsburgh Pirates and The Philadelphia Athletics (now the Oakland Athletics).
On January 27th, 1932, Miss Osborn, the Maryland State Normal School librarian, Miss. Osborn, is given permission by the faculty to write up students who refuse to spit out their gum. Said students would be sent to Principal Tall’s office to be dealt with accordingly.
On January 23rd, 1923, Principal Tall sends a student with a stuttering problem to a New York school to take Speech Correction courses, all expenses paid. Principal Tall believed that a stutter would impede on the student’s progress as a teacher and wanted to ensure their success.
On January 16th, 1935, Principal Tall refused to allow cigarette companies from putting up smoking ads around the campus because she felt smoking to be socially unacceptable. In a time where smoking was not only popular but considered a healthy activity, Principal Tall’s fight against the tobacco companies is a unique case.
On January 15th, 1866, Maryland State Normal School opened under the ruling of Principal McFadden Alexander Newell. MSNS began as a teacher-training school with an enrollment of 48 students. The campus was originally located on Paca Street in Baltimore and only had one building, Red Man’s Hall. The campus wouldn’t be moved to Towson until
The campus’ Nativity scene disappeared in early December of 1959. All hope of seeing their beloved props was lost. But, on January 13th, 1960, the nativity mysteriously reappeared undamaged in one of the parking lots on campus. Perhaps the perpetrator, who was never caught, needed it for their own holiday needs?
On January 11th, 1897, Teachers of the Maryland State Normal School felt that students were given too much homework. They felt that lessening the amount of take home work would make them focus more in class. Too bad today’s Professors don’t share this philosophy!
Before the Cook Library we know and love, Maryland State Normal School students went to Stephens’ Hall to check out their books. On this day, January 10th, 1917, the Stephens’ library underwent renovations to make room for new books; old and worn out books were replaced with newer editions.
On January 8th, 1931, Maryland State Normal School faculty and teachers came together for a Bowling night. Bowling became increasingly popular in the early 1900’s and was a favorite American pastime.
On January 7th, 1893, The faculty had lockers installed for students to neatly and safely store their wraps and shawls.
