Today in TU History: Maryland State Normal School Opens Its Doors

On January 15th, 1866, Maryland State Normal School opened under the ruling of Principal McFadden Alexander Newell.

MSNS began as a teacher-training school with an enrollment of 48 students. The campus was originally located on Paca Street in Baltimore and only had one building, Red Man’s Hall. The campus wouldn’t be moved to Towson until 1910.
