Utilizing the Faculty in Your Department

When it comes to utilizing resources such as faculty, I know I am not the only one who falls guilty of being careless. However, using every resource presented to you as a student and rising young professional is important. It is more than evident that networking and making connections are the most viable gateways to a fruitful business career. That being said, the professors, advisors, and administrative assistants within your department know a great deal when it comes to your topic of study, and many are even seasoned professionals who can get you a foot in the door when you go on to enter the professional world after graduation.

How Can I Get in Contact with my Advisor?

The best way to get in contact with an advisor is to schedule an appointment via e-mail. Most faculty and staff are quick to respond and are more than ready to try to help with whatever you need.  Making an appointment is also the best way to ensure you will get an allotted amount of time to talk to a faculty/staff member as well as leaving him/her better prepared for your questions or concerns.  However, if you have a quick question, you can also check out their walk-in office hours and stop by during those times without a pre-scheduled appointment.

What Can You ask an Advisor About?

Anything and everything!  Ask about your classes, scheduling, professors, career path opportunities, joining organizations, or anything else that comes to mind. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to hear that they are more than willing if not pleased to assist you on your collegiate journey. The faculty within your department come with a wealth of knowledge – it would be a waste not to see them as such and ask for their expertise.  Things academic advisors are specifically trained to assist you with include:

  • Degree planning,
  • Assistance in understanding CBE academic policies,
  • Potential Career Opportunities within your field of study,
  • Pass grade and Withdrawal options, and
  • Graduation details.

Finally, Stay Connected….

Creating these ties isn’t always the easiest the easiest thing to do and maintaining strong connections in general is a difficult task; however, it is worth the trouble. As stated above, advisors are here to serve as a resource for you, so make sure to use them as such. Don’t simply meet with them because it’s mandatory and you have a hold on your account – make sure you are also keeping up regular contact with them so they can be there to help when you need it.
