Abstract: Since the late 1980s, dramatic and deep changes have taken place in the pattern of international order, bringing it under question. Through political and economic analysis, this article proposes a new international order that is focused on mutual respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty, mutual non-aggression, equality and mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence. The fundamental objective of the new order is to build up rational international economic and political systems in accordance with the fundamental interests of all peoples in the world. By drawing on historical experiences and applying them to present circumstances, this objective may be realized. Firstly, the practice of international relations should follow the “Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence,” as seen in China, reflecting features of a common norms that coincide with the United Nations Charter. Secondly, the realities of international life today should continue to balance the great powers so that no hegemon is in a position to dominate the world. Thirdly, the new world order should promote peace and development, the two themes of this era. The People’s Republic of China is safeguarding world peace by upholding development in a peaceful environment. Considering China’s socialist modernization drive, a new international order based on the above practices would foster a new age of prosperity.
