Volume XII – Number 1

David Binder

Abstract: This article argues for the normalization of US-Cuban relations given the great deal each state has to gain in regards to national image and national security, respectively, from doing so. The insistence of the US to label Fidel Castro as a ‘menace’ capable of immense destruction has martyred him and thus has bolstered the Castro myth. While maintaining close ties with the Soviet Union, he has strutted through the third world as a liberator. If the US wishes to curb Castro’s revolutionary fervor and popularity, it must cease with the hostility shown towards Cuba. The embargo and the naval base at Guantanamo Bay push Cuba closer into the arms of the Soviet Union, only worsening relations with America. There is a long road ahead until both countries will cease to be enemies, however, normalization is the first step towards a better ordered world.
