Abstract:
Peacekeeping is one of the foremost challenges facing the United Nations today. Peacekeeping forces have been pressed into service in numerous conflicts, and in the past five years its budget has gone from $230 million to $3.6 billion. This aspect of the UN is a great accessory to making the world a safer place. While there are some shortcomings, they can all be modified to improve peacekeeping’s efficiency and effectiveness. For example, in Cyprus there has been little success because of underlying conflicts with the applicability of UN law. If member states worked to better support peacekeeping efforts of the UN, this would not be a problem. The Security Council should also take “all measure necessary” to actually enforce its own resolutions. If it did, the prospects of UN peacekeeping would again be greatly increased. In conclusion, peacekeeping is an asset of the UN that can be used to encourage conflict resolution all around the world. While it has some shortcomings at the moment, these can all be modified and fixed with the cooperation of member states.
