Building Supportive Spaces for Multilingual Learners — This one-hour webinar discusses concrete ways for teachers to become more interculturally aware and use effective ESOL and SIOP resources to better connect with their students in building supportive and safe spaces for them to feel included and learn. Bullying Prevention and Response When Supporting Refugee Students — This one-hour webinar is created by the Switchboard refugee support organization to outline ideas for schools to use when creating anti-bullying initiatives for their multilingual learners and full student population.
Dual Language Immersion — This approach to teaching multilingual learners includes instruction in two languages within the school setting. The percentage of time in each language varies as students become more proficient with both languages. This series of videos (each only 4-6 minutes long) shows two teachers in a summer school dual language immersion setting alternating with English and Spanish with students who will be entering the first grade the next school year.

Educating Transnational Students: Languages and Identities Across Borders — This 30-minute video shares approaches to build on the assets of students we sometimes think of as immigrants who are really in transnational families. These families have cultural and/or physical roots in more than one country, and we can value students’ rich identities more explicitly in our classroom environments. Effective Literacy Instruction for Multilingual Learners — These two podcasts each run for 20 minutes and are created by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of English Language Acquisition. The podcasts explain effective literacy practices in monolingual and bilingual instructional settings.

Office of English Language Acquisition–Teacher Appreciation: Spotlight on Multilingualism — This one-hour webinar aired by OELA during Teacher Appreciation Week during May 2023 interviews four bilingual teacher leaders (and Teachers of the Year) to gain insights on the assets of multilingual students and practical ideas for teachers and school systems.
Stephen Krashen Webinar and Conversation — Dr. Stephen Krashen is the author of over 525 books and articles related to second language acquisition. He created the “Natural Approach” to learning a second language and was a founder of the original idea for sheltered classroom experiences. Here is an outline of his remarks during the presentation he gave in this 55-minute webinar. There is also a link to his website which contains hyperlinks to free and lower-cost resources that he has produced.

Transnational and Transborder Multilingual Learners — This 30-minute panel discussion from the Center for Applied Linguistics help teachers and families to think about the cultural assets and settings in which children and families are living sometimes as multilingual learners. The term “immigrant” may not capture the rich cycles of life that can reflect our learners’ experiences in a culturally-responsive way.
Traumatic Stress Among Refugee Children and Youth — This is a series of three webinars presented by Switchboard, a national organization supporting the resettlement of immigrants in the U.S. Each webinar is about 90 minutes long and contains explanations, case study examples, and practical tips for educators about supporting multilingual learners and families with trauma-informed practices. The presenter for the series is Dr. Jordan Greenbaum, a retired child abuse physician who has worked in the field of trauma and maltreatment for over 20 years.
