Special Edition: Sustainability & Climate Action Plan
Help Build a Sustainable and Climate-Ready TU
Towson University is taking critical steps to address climate change and build a more sustainable future through the development of our Sustainability & Climate Action Plan (SCAP).
What is a SCAP?
The SCAP will provide a road map for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, adapting to climate impacts, and increasing campus sustainability and resilience. It is part of a larger comprehensive planning initiative to shape the future of our campus through three interconnected strategic plans that will guide our physical development, sustainability commitments, and energy systems over the next decade.
What is Sustainability?
The United Nations defines sustainability as meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainability is a pluralistic concept encompassing human and ecological health, racial equity and social justice, secure livelihoods, and wellbeing for all now and in the future.
What is Climate Change?
Climate change is the long-term shift in temperatures and weather patterns caused by human activities like burning fossil fuels, farming practices, and land use. It is driving more frequent and severe weather events nationwide. At Towson, the impacts show up as heavier flooding, and extreme heat, and poor air quality, threatening campus facilities, daily operations, and the health of our community.
