Commonly Asked Questions by Students (Classes/Advising)

Where can I go to check what courses I still have to complete?

You can check your MyTU. Log-in and go to your Student Center, then click on Academic Requirements. There you can find your catalog year, the requirements for your major/minor, what courses you’ve completed, as well as what courses you need to complete. The Academic Requirements page is very useful in staying organized in your degree completion process. You can also find your catalog year at MyTU and also all of the courses you need to complete for your degree.

I don’t know how to write a cover letter or resume, what can I do?

Go to the Towson University Career Center and have a peer advisor look over what you have thus far. You can also stop by CBE’s Student Advising and Career Services (SACS) Office and schedule an appointment to meet with a Student Consultant who can help you with any cover letter/resume concerns you may have. Lastly, ask a professor or advisor to review or give you some tips on writing a resume/cover letter. There are an abundance of resources available – it’s up to you to take advantage of them.

My advisor hasn’t reached out to me.  What can I do?

Reach out to them; the relationship between your advisor and you is not a one-way street. It is just as much your job as it is theirs to communicate when you have any questions and/or concerns, so e-mail them, stop by their walk-in hours, or schedule an appointment so you have a set time to meet.

I’m not sure what major/concentration to select.  How do I decide?

When deciding what field to study, you must first reflect on your personal interests and passions. Ask yourself if you can tie what you want to study to a future profession in business. Careers driven by passion are often the most successful; however, if you are still unsure what to study, utilize your resources. Ask your academic advisor, take an on-line test such as StrengthsQuest, schedule an appointment with the Career Center, or speak to a professor in the area of study you’re considering. There are so many avenues at your disposal, so use them.

How do I know what class time/professors to pick?

Firstly, select what works best for your schedule. It’s important to space out your classes throughout the day so you can be at your most attentive in class. Also, look into the professors on-line by checking out their faculty bio’s on the Towson website. You can also look into their teaching style and assess if it’s the most effective way for you to learn by finding feedback from other students on-line.
