Student of the Week: Matthew Lowinger

 

Matthew Lowinger is a current junior with an expected graduation in May 2020. He came into Towson University with his concentration in Finance and Investments due to his prior experience; he interned at Merrill Lynch in their DC branch where he worked on research. He later went to a smaller boutique hedge fund in Santa Monica, California to work on research analytics. Then, he landed in a Towson-based investment services firm in the summer of 2017. Matthew decided to come to Towson University to pursue his interests in Business, Finance, and Investments due to the size and feel of the school; he felt that Towson allowed him the opportunity to grow and be a leader. Matthew knew he had high goals and expectations for himself and wanted to feel like a big fish in a smaller-sized pond.

 

While Matthew came to Towson with a Finance and Investments concentration, he has since switched to Entrepreneurship. He is currently the lead associate for Student Launch Pad (SLP) here at Towson.  SLP is the startup hub on campus that helps drives students to be entrepreneurs through workshops, a speaker series, small business consultation, and networking opportunities. SLP is also very supportive of alumni entrepreneurs such as Kevin Ames, co-founder of Chesapeake Collection, and Steven Stillwell, co-founder of Loophole. Matthew is currently planning an intercollegiate entrepreneurship conference that he co-founded called “Innov8MD,” which has eight schools involved and over 200 entrepreneurs, investors, and students projected to be in attendance. When Matthew isn’t working on these exciting ventures, he is contributing as a member of the Student Leadership Council within the College of Business and Economics.

 

Even with Matthew’s switch to Entrepreneurship, he still envisions the world of investing in his future. When asked about his dream job, he shared that he would love nothing more than to eventually become a venture capitalist and help passionate people get their products on the market. He developed his love for this job from watching Shark Tank at age seven with his parents every Friday night while eating take-out Chinese food and sushi.
