TIP #1: When in Doubt, Come See Your Advisor!
Classes are now in session, and this quieter time of the term is a great chance to build a relationship with your advisor. If you have any academic questions or need clarity about finding an internship, if you are considering changing your major/minor, or if you’re having difficulty with a class, your advisor is there to help you and be your support system.
Before making an advising appointment, go through this list to see if it answers your question:
• Review your academic requirements
• Go to the Academic Advising website
• Check your Degree Completion Plan
• Check the on-line catalog for course prerequisites
TIP #2: The IN’S and OUT’S of EBTM 250 and 251
These courses are both one credit each and are only five weeks long. Usually, students will register for EBTM 250 for the first five weeks of the semester and will take EBTM 251 for the last five weeks within the same semester. Many students make the mistake of underestimating the workload for both courses, so if you need the extra help there are tutoring sessions offered in Stephens Hall.
Regarding EBTM 250, here are some additional facts to get you prepared:
• Make sure to attend the first day of class, since it is worth 20% of your overall grade.
• Prior to the first day of class, purchase your textbook and access code as soon as possible.
• There are two attempts to pass the Microsoft Excel certification exam, if both attempts fail you must retake the course.
Regarding EBTM 251, which can only be taken after you have passed EBTM 250, you will be using what you have learned about Excel and will be applying it to real-world case studies.
Here are some additional facts to get you prepared for EBTM 251:
• EBTM 251 is an in-person lecture course and does not have an on-line component.
• This class will be using more in-depth business problems in Microsoft Excel.
• This class uses a +/- grading system and involves group work.
TIP #3: Check Your E-mails Daily
It’s time to start checking your e-mail! It may seem tedious and exhausting to check and read your e-mails; however, this is how important information is communicated by your advisor and the university. In your Towson student e-mail, there may be urgent news from your professor, workshop availabilities listed, and/or changes in your academic requirements that you might want to be informed of. A good example of an important e-mail you regularly receive is the CBE Connect newsletter that comes out every Wednesday – it has useful resources about internships and upcoming events, as well as timely need-to-know reminders.
If you have any questions, please consult with your academic advisor.
We are glad to have all of you back at TU, and we’ll see you next week for another edition of CBE Connect!
