The Ins and Outs of EBTM 250 and 251

Are you looking for some help or a guideline in passing the Microsoft Excel exam? You came to the right place. These courses are both one credit each and are only five weeks long. Usually, students will register for EBTM 250 for the first five weeks of the semester and will take EBTM 251 for the last five weeks within the same semester. Many students make the mistake of underestimating the workload for both courses and it can be very challenging for at times, so if you need the extra help there are tutoring sessions offered every Wednesday from 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. in Stephens Hall, 200 and every Thursday from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. in Stephens Hall, 224 for EBTM 250.

EBTM 250

This is a hybrid course which is about 95% of the work is to be completed by the student on their own time, while meeting in class once per week. How this works is you will have class and you will be assigned simulations weekly that is required to be done before your next class. The simulations starts off with learning the basics and functionality of Microsoft Excel. As, the weeks go by the simulations will be slightly advanced and difficult. This is where many students start to fall behind, because they do not appropriately budget their times for any need of questions or help accordingly. So it is important to give yourself enough time to complete the simulations and to stay on track with them.

Here are some additional facts and tips to get you prepared:

  • Make sure to attend the first day of class, since it is worth 20% of your overall grade.

  • Prior to the first day of class, purchase your textbook and access code as soon as possible.

  • There are two attempts to pass the Microsoft Excel certification exam, if both attempts fail you must retake the course.

  • Make sure to fully understand the material after every simulation and practice if needed, the simulations are to prepare you for your MOS certification exam.

  • Ask questions when you have them, you are not the only student who feels they need help and you aren’t alone in this. You have your classmates, your professor and tutoring sessions as your resources.

EBTM 251

Once you have passed EBTM 250, and is certified as a Microsoft Excel Specialist (a great resume builder), you will then take EBTM 251. In this course you will be using the skills you’ve learned from 250 and will be applying them to real-world case studies. How is this course different from 250? For starters, you will be mostly working in groups to solve the case studies and there are no simulations in this course.

Here are some additional facts and tips to get you prepared for:

  • EBTM 251 is an in-person lecture course and does not have an on-line component.

  • This class will be using more in-depth business problems in Microsoft Excel.

  • This class uses a +/- grading system and involves group work.

  • It’s important to regularly attend class and to communicate with your classmates, as you will be working together frequently.
