How You Can Utilize Your Advisor

Advisors can sometimes be overlooked and underutilized throughout the semester. Meeting with advisors becomes increasingly popular as scheduling for the next semester begins or issues start to arise. While your advisor is there to help you through your scheduling issues, it is important to get to know your advisor before problems arise so they know you and your history  a bit better and are thus able to better help you.

It is always a good idea to schedule a meeting with your advisor at the beginning of the semester to make sure everything you are doing this semester is correct and the best fit for you as a student. It is even more important to meet with your advisor during the scheduling period for the upcoming semester. This is important because you want to make sure that the classes you sign up for the next semester are correct before you start scheduling so that you don’t run into any issues during the actual scheduling process. When you meet with you advisor, it is best that you bring your degree completion plan with you to help with the scheduling process and to help you stay on track.

In order to schedule an appointment with your advisor, you can look them up on the Towson website to get their scheduling link. Once you find the scheduling link, you will be able to see what days and times they are available to meet with you. If the day or time you would like to meet is unavailable, check to see if your advisor has any walk-in hours where you are free to swing by at any time within those listed hours. If you decide to come by during your advisor’s walk-in hours, be aware that other students may be ahead of you, so you might encounter wait times. Making an appointment is always best so that you know with certainty that you will have the time slot that you signed up for.

Scheduling a time to meet with your advisor during peak times such as scheduling periods can be difficult. If you try to schedule an appointment in the midst of a scheduling period, you might run into the issue of not finding a meeting time that works for you. It is suggested that you plan ahead and schedule an appointment with your advisor early on so you can make sure you get the time that works best for you.
