How to Be Professional

Do you think your college experience has prepared you for your career? Towson University is passionate about providing you with the skills needed to prepare you for your chosen career.

Do you have what it takes to be professional? Several factors play a role in presenting yourself as a professional, including the way you talk and the way you present yourself. Harvard Business School Professor Laura Morgan Roberts suggests, “taking an active role in shaping your behavior is the way you form your professional image — which, in turn, will dictate the relationships you have with co-workers, business associates and clients” (Mallory, Stark). So, I ask again – do you have what it takes to be professional? Most of you will say “yes”, but some of you will be unsure. If your answer is “yes”, it is probably because you have attended different career fairs that Towson University hosts. Here at Towson University, we hold career, internship, and many other fairs, so students have a chance to show and create a positive reputation for themselves. Several upcoming events include the following:

Things to consider for job or internship fairs:

  • First of all, clarify your goals. What do you hope to get out of this fair? What do you want to accomplish?
  • What is the company about? Do you have what they are looking for? Once you get the answer, think about why you are interested in that company and how you might connect your background with their needs.
  • Is your elevator speech ready? How are you going to introduce yourself?
  • Bring copies of your resume. Don’t just walk in with 10 copies of your resume in hand, bring a folder or a portfolio.  If you don’t have your resume then don’t skip the event! Ask for a business card from employers that interest you and send your resume later.
  • Dress and act professionally. Remember you are dressing to impress.

What do I wear….?

Be cautious of what you pick because you have only one chance to make that first impression. Remember: first impressions are based on your appearance and how you present yourself. Most companies have different expectations of dress code, so RESEARCH the company you want to impress and dress appropriately.

Professional Attire

Rule #1- Don’t stand out- An employer should remember you because of your performance during an interview not because of your outfit. Don’t go with shiny, bright, or colorful prints. The same goes for your tie, shoes, and socks. Also, most importantly, do not wear too much makeup, you do not want to be ruled out because you look like a cast member on the Jersey Shore.

Rule #2- Avoid wearing too much cologne/perfume – if you like a particular scent, it does not necessarily mean that others will like it too. Remember, some people are sensitive (or allergic) to scents, so act accordingly.
