There are many internship possibilities for Towson University students within the Baltimore/Washington metropolitan area. It may take a little digging on your part, but overall, it will be worth it. It is highly advisable to try and do an internship in the field, especially if you know what kind of direction you want your career path to take. Do your research! Make sure that your choice of internship pertains to what you want to do!
Once at your internship, you will probably be doing “grunt work.” Try not to be terribly discouraged. Remember: it’s not necessarily what you are doing there, but rather the mere fact that you are there. It’s bizarre, but true. Many TU students have gone on to great careers in the policy making world through their internships.
A great resource on campus for internships in political science is Dr. Martha Kumar and Dr. James Roberts for International Studies. Feel free to visit her and pick up an application form in LI-118.
Don’t be afraid to try and do an internship during the school year! Thousands of students swarm upon Washington, DC during the summertime, making it much more difficult to do an internship there. There is a lot less competition for interning positions during the school year. Exploit your great location here in Baltimore-you have tremendous access to all kinds of opportunities!
Finally, APPLY EARLY. Deadlines for internships will pass you by extremely quickly if you do not apply in time. Often, positions will be filled a month or so before the final deadline, so make sure you jump on top of your application and get it in there!
