Partners in Education: Working Together to Enhance the Teaching of Latin America

Through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad program, Towson University provided an immersion experience in Peru for six weeks in the summer of 2024 for fifteen in-service educators and administrators from across the United States.

The goal of the project was to enhance participants’ Spanish language skills, to assist them in developing intercultural competence, and to broaden their knowledge of Latin American culture. The program included pre- and post-departure activities and a six-week immersion experience in Piura and Cusco, Peru. Pre-departure communication, planning, and orientation sessions took place in the spring of 2024. Post-immersion activities were completed in the spring of 2025. In the immersion experience itself – in Piura and Cusco, Peru from June 21 through August 3, 2024 –  participants, led by Towson University faculty, participated in language study, lectures, interviews, home stays, excursions, workshops and cultural activities as they explored issues central to Latin America. Participants learned firsthand about Peru’s history, language, culture, geography, education, art and architecture, indigenous peoples, and modern economy and society. In addition, participants were asked to develop curricula based on their experiences for use in their classrooms, schools, and communities. This website allows those educators to share the materials they developed.
