The Muslim Student Association (MSA) at Towson University is committed to spreading knowledge and awareness about Islam, while also collaborating with other student groups on campus to promote cultural competence. MSA is a place where Muslims as well as Non-Muslims can come together to discuss faith, culture, and other matters in a friendly and inclusive environment. We are open to everyone and would love for you to discover what the MSA is about.

Muslim Student Association (MSA)

Constitution

 

Article I—Name

 

The name of this organization shall be Muslim Student Association (MSA).

 

Article II—Purpose

 

The MSA’s goal is to spread awareness of the Islamic identity as well as promote its attributes in a positive and fun manner.

 

Article III—Membership

 

Section 1 – Active membership of this student organization shall be chosen without discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, age, national origin, disability, marital status, veteran status, sexual orientation or gender.

 

Students must have at least a 2.0 GPA and be a fee paying undergraduate student to be an active member of this student organization.

 

Active membership of a student organization includes the right to vote and hold office.

 

Sections 2– Active members of this organization are members who: Attend 50% of meetings, pay dues, etc.

 

Section 3– Dues of $5 are not mandatory, yet could be made as a donation.

 

Article IV—Executive Officers

 

Section 1 The executive officers of the MSA shall be as follows: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Public Relations Coordinator, Fundraising Chair, Community Service Coordinator, and Programming Director. All Executive Officers must be fee paying, undergraduate Towson University students with at least a 2.0 GPA

 

Section 2 – An officer may be impeached by a 2/3 majority vote of the present active members if he or she is not fulfilling their constitutional duties.

 

Section 3 – In the event that an officer is impeached or resigns an election will be held for that position in accordance with Article VI – Elections.

 

 

Article V—Duties of the Executive Officers

President:

 

  • Prepare agenda (in accordance with Vice President)
  • Lead weekly board meetings
  • Represent MSA at campus functions
  • Media representative/voice of MSA when certain issues or matters arise
  • Correspond with MSA advisor – Dr. Kirmani
  • Make MSA announcements at Jumuah prayer
  • Check-in regularly with MSA board, make sure everyone fulfills responsibilities
  • Ensuring a smooth transition between Fall and Spring semester and making sure that positions are filled and elections are held
  • Letter from the President
  • Make sure MSA goals are being met – Aim for Package 4
  • Work hand in hand with SGA representatives

 

Vice President:

 

  • Act in absence of president; fill in for president’s responsibilities when needed
  • Delegating roles and responsibilities of the group
  • Be a guide and resource of help to all board member duties
  • Attend meetings and events that require MSA presence
  • Help prepare agenda with President
  • Keep in close contact with President about MSA occurrences

 

 

Treasurer:

 

  • Attend budget approval meetings and SGA hearings.
  • Maintain budget lines of the organization
  • Communicate with board members in regards to account standing
  • Work hand in hand with the SGA Accountant
  • Maintain a relation with the Ticket office when MSA is selling event tickets
  • Work with the Fundraising officer to produce funds for the organization
  • Maintain records of financial transactions and donation money
  • Filling out necessary paperwork in collaboration with the Programing Chair
    • Prove-it fund, collaboration form
    • Food waivers
    • Room reservations

 

Secretary:

 

  • Take notes during weekly meetings
  • Take attendance for weekly meetings (CSD Attendance Sheet)
  • Update the directory and the roster of the MSA
  • Send weekly e-mails to club members
  • Be in contact and a direct resource with general members
  • Responsible for the main MSA e-mail account

 

 

Public relations:

  • Market events/news to members
  • Work alongside board members in order to communicate upcoming announcements
  • Use social media as a positive influence to portray our mission
  • Display the Islamic culture to reflect organization
  • Aim to expand and look at reports and trends to see progress
  • Collaborate with other MSAs and board through various projects
    • InterMSA
  • Promote/advertise elections
  • Respond and consistently post on social media
  • Social media outlets responsible for
    • Facebook
    • Twitter
    • Instagram
    • MSA website
    • Post weekly – come up with #

– Responsible for taking photography at all events, special meetings

– Creates flyers/advertisement for all events

Historian (Non-Board Position)

Based on the discretion of the board, this committee may be added as of assistance to the Public Relations Officer.

 

Programming Chair:

  • Working, speaking, and finding entertainers, performers and vendors
  • Filling out necessary paperwork in collaboration with the Treasurer
    • Prove-it fund, collaboration form
    • Food waivers
    • Room reservations
  • Planning and discussing event needs with ECS
  • Planning, executing, attending events
  • Communication and collaboration internally and externally
  • Coming up and discussing future events with MSA board

 

Community Service Chair:

  • Aim for Package 4 – 150 Service Hours
  • Finding and creating easily accessible community service events
  • Getting a large attendance to come to community service
  • Finding diverse service opportunities
  • Communication with members – provide updates and ideas
  • Work with other TU student organizations
  • Make sure that community service hours are submitted

 

 

Fundraising Chair:

  • Responsible to set up programs to raise money for the organization to reach its semester fundraising goal
  • Make an announcement in regards to donations during Friday prayers
  • Responsible for contacting businesses to fundraise along
  • Responsible for collecting contacting Events and Conferences Services to request a location for fundraising
  • Responsible for communicating with the Treasurer for budget needs
  • Responsible for bringing all resources needed to set up a fundraising event

 

 

Article VI—Elections

  1. Election of the officers shall take place yearly in May.
  2. Elections will be chaired by the advisor of the organization.
  3. In the event of a tie a revote will be done.
  4. Any active student member is eligible to vote and for nomination as an officer of the Executive Committee who (a) meets the Towson University SGA eligibility for student office holding (b) fulfills the qualifications as set up by this constitution and the Executive Committee.

 

Article VII—Amendments

Amendments to this Constitution may be proposed by the board or general members. Approval of amendments must be approved by majority of attendees. Amendments shall be declared or adopted upon SGA approval. Minimum attendance for a vote must include all board members and at least 5 general members.
