Each semester, I invite guest speakers to contextualize various atmospheric applications – forecasting, emergency management, resilience, hazards communication, climate science, and more! Dr. Nicole Hutton, Ph.D. is the Tribal-ISAC Executive and Development Coordinator and works at the intersection of risk reduction, resilience, and vulnerability. Dr. Hutton eared her Ph.D. in Geography, Environmental Science and Policy from the University of South Florida. Dr. Hutton previously served as Geography Program Director and Assistant Director of Engagement for the Institute for Coastal Adaptation and Resilience at Old Dominion University. Brian Hutton, Jr. is an on-air TV meteorologist at WTAE Channel 4 Pittsburgh. Brian earned his meteorology degrees from California University of Pennsylvania and Mississippi State University (MSU). An award-winning meteorologist, Brian has extensive experience navigating the changing media landscape, and he is also a lecturer at MSU, teaching the next generation of meteorologists. Matthew Miziorko is an emergency management specialist for Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security. Matthew earned an B.S. in Geography and Geospatial Applications and a M.S. in Emergency Management from Millersville University of Pennsylvania. Actively involved in the Maryland Emergency Management Association (MDEMA), American Meteorological Society, and an architect of the Maryland Mesonet, Matthew has proven experience in public safety, climate resilience, and geospatial technology. Dragan Milošević, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Urban Hydrometeorology at Wageningen University in The Netherlands. Dr. Milošević works at the intersection of urban climate, integrating nature based solutions to mitigate flood and heat risk. Yuliya Dzyuban, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the M.S. in Sustainable Environmental Systems at Pratt Institute’s Graduate Center for Planning and the Environment. Dr. Dzyuban earned her Ph.D. from Arizona State University, and has developed solutions addressing heat vulnerability around the world. Dr. Donald Boesch is a professor of marine science and, from 1990 to 2017, president of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. From 2006-2017, he concurrently served as Vice Chancellor for Environmental Sustainability for the University System of Maryland. Dr. Boesch is one of the nation’s most recognized and experienced experts in the application of science to policies for the protection, sustainable use, and restoration of coastal ecosystems and for adaptation to global climate change. Rebecca Rehr is the Director of Climate Policy and Justice at the Maryland League of Conservation Voters. She joined Maryland LCV in 2022 to shape the organization’s climate policy efforts with a focus on communities that are overburdened by a history of environmental injustice. Rebecca deeply believes that health equity is the foundation of strong and just climate solutions. She earned a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies and public policy at Franklin and Marshall College and a master’s degree in public health in environmental health sciences from the University of Maryland School of Public Health. Jonathan Jennings is a meteorologist with Utah’s Division of Water Resources where he coordinates the cloud seeding program designed to support the state’s water supply. He earned his B.S. from California University of Pennsylvania and appeared on the 2020 series Connected: The Hidden Science of Everything which streamed on Netflix. Jonathan previously served as President of the Weather Modification Association.
Jennifer Fitchett, Ph.D. is a Professor of Physical Geography at the University of Witwatersrand’s School of Geography, Archaeology and Environmental Studies in Johannesburg, South Africa. Dr. Fitchett earned her Ph.D. through Wits and UCL in London and specializes in biometeorology, bridging the gap between research and public understanding.
