Text Sets
The Text Set assignment prepares library media candidates to be a highly valued resource to classroom teachers for the purposes of increasing literacy and life-long reading habits among elementary school students representing a diverse student population. To achieve this goal, candidates use their knowledge of historical and contemporary trends in children’s literature to analyze and select at least 20 resources related to a selected text set theme. The text set theme is a skill, concept or issue relevant to the elementary school curriculum in any subject content and aligned to the Maryland School Curriculum.
The resources include a variety of formats, ability levels, and genres; and they will collectively represent diversity and multiple perspectives. Candidates partner with other educators to create a Text Set Overview Chart, and a Text Set Graphic Organizer to describe and visually illustrate how the resources relate to the text Set theme. Candidates also produce Model Instructional Plan as a guide for implantation of the Text Set with student populations. These tools will be useful for classroom teachers as they plan instruction using the Text Set collaboratively with the school library media specialist.
