In August 2016, Project ASTRO teacher Rennie Watson (Lakeland Elementary Middle School, Baltimore City) visited the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. Her Project ASTRO astronomer partner, Dr. Matthew Knight (UMD) was making remote observations with the nearby Southern Astrophysical Research telescope the same week as her visit.
Below are some photos from Rennie’s visit, which included a tour by CTIO astronomy educator Kadur Flores-Murillo.
“The visit truly was amazing, and I feel lucky to have made the connection with Project ASTRO partners. I never would have imagined myself in the Andes standing in the first International Dark Sky Sanctuary in the world, known as the “Gabriela Mistral Dark Sky Sanctuary” after the famed Chilean poet.”
