If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you need to check out the Critical Language Scholarship Program!
The CLS Program is a FULLY-FUNDED language immersion program developed by the U.S. Department of State. Any American student in a degree-seeking program and with an interest in learning a language is eligible to apply.
The current languages offered by the CLS Program include:
- Arabic*
- Azerbaijani
- Bangla
- Chinese**
- Hindi
- Indonesian
- Japanese**
- Korean
- Persian*
- Punjabi
- Russian**
- Swahili
- Turkish
- Urdu
*This program requires 1 academic year of previous language study
**This program requires 2 academic years of previous language study
The CLS Program offers language programs in four different levels; beginning, advanced beginning, intermediate, and advanced.

- This will be a general ‘launch’ webinar for a wider audience explaining the goals of the program, highlighting resources available to students and study abroad offices and providing some tips for applicants.
