Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

Calling all Towson students!

Do you receive the Pell Grant? Have you always wanted to study abroad, but the sticker shock left you feeling less than optimistic? Do you like free stuff? If you answered yes to these questions, keep reading! We’ve got some important information coming your way.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship will be accepting applications for the 2016 fall semester and 2016-2017 academic year in less than 3 months! What’s the Gilman Scholarship, you ask? It’s your ticket to exploring the world! The Gilman Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. undergraduate students studying or interning abroad who have limited financial means for such opportunities.

So who’s eligible? Applicants to the program must be U.S. citizens seeking an undergraduate degree who receive the Federal Pell Grant. Students must be studying/interning abroad for at least 28 days (14 for students enrolled in community college) and no more than one academic year. Students must also be studying/interning in a country that is not currently on the U.S. Department of State Travel Warning list.

Award amounts vary based on the length of the program and the amount of need the student has, but the average award is $4,000 ($5,000 is the max). Applicants that will be studying a critical foreign language while abroad are eligible for the additional Critical Need Language Award, which is $3,000. That’s potentially $8,000 in awards!
