Development and Dissemination of the Inventory
The Initial Delphi Study
From 2016 to 2017, we conducted a national research study that utilized the collective expertise from both leaders in the field and practitioners to design an inventory of teaching competencies for effective instruction in student-centered, one-to-one learning environments. Through a combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches as part of the Delphi research method, a panel of one-to-one technology experts from across the United States determined the competencies that should comprise this final inventory. The study resulted in the development of 30 teaching competencies for one-to-one classrooms, divided into five areas: instructional planning; instructional delivery; assessment of learning; classroom management; and professionalism and leadership. Results of the Delphi study, including a full discussion of the procedures used to determine consensus for the inventory, was published in the December 2018 issue of the Journal of Educational Computing. The Next Phase of this Research
Instrument Design, Development, and Validation
Beginning in 2019, we will be developing a comprehensive needs assessment that can be used by representatives in school districts to plan effective professional development for educators of one-to-one technology learning environments. To do so, we will be utilizing the results of the previous Delphi study to develop a self-assessment instrument that will measure one-to-one educators’ teaching competencies. This instrument will be designed to benefit school leaders and support personnel to plan effective training opportunities that support educators in providing effective, student-centered instruction in one-to-one classrooms.
